What Is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a noncontagious common skin condition that causes rapid skin cell reproduction, resulting in red, dry patches of thickened skin usually on the elbows, knees, and scalp. Psoriasis is common and chronic characterized by raised plaque areas on the skin which may vary from minor localized patches to complete body coverage. Psoriasis affects approximately 2-4% of the general population. The causes of psoriasis are not fully understood. Participating in psoriasis clinical research trials is helping researchers understand. It is not purely and skin disorder and can have a negative impact on many organ systems in the body. Psoriasis has been associated with increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and immune disorders. It is generally considered a genetic disease thought to be triggered or influenced by environmental (lifestyle, stress) factors.
